For those who haven't seen Get Smart, Bruce (Masi Oka) and Lloyd (Nate Torrance) are tech specialists at Control, a covert U.S. intelligence agency. In Bruce and Lloyd: Out of Control, Bruce and Lloyd are in the process of developing what could best be described as an invisibility blanket, but after several failed trials, the technology needs refining. Using their expert nerdery, the duo finally gets the blanket to work, and hold an office keg-party to celebrate. After the late night, beer-fueled festivities, the duo return the next day to find that Control headquarters had been ransacked and the invisibility blanket is missing. In a race against time, the two must scramble to locate and recover the technology in order to save Control…and their jobs.

The story parallels the events of Get Smart at several key points. First off, the invisibility technology is being developed in order to aid Maxwell Smart and Agent 99's investigation of Kaos as Control's last operational field agents. Also, the ransacking of Control plays a pivotal role in the stories of both Get Smart and Bruce and Lloyd: Out of Control. But again, neither the writing of Astle and Ember or Bruce and Lloyd: Out of Control's impressive production value can distract the fact that the characters of Bruce and Lloyd are simply not funny. It would seem that the writers attempted to make Bruce and Lloyd into nerdy versions of Harold and Kumar, but without the drugs. Which, for obvious reasons, completely kills the concept.

Instead we are left with the mildly amusing, but mostly anxiety-inducing misadventures of Control's perpetually awkward Bruce and Lloyd. Heroes veteran Masi Oka offers a relatively generic performance, while newcomer Nate Torrance steals the comedic spotlight. Also appearing in the film as carryovers from Get Smart are Terry Crews as Agent 91 and Larry Miller as Control's Underchief.
