Der Film: Wer Angst vor Krabbeltieren hat, wird wohl schreiend das Weite suchen: Die beeindruckende IMAX-Doku Bugs! kann nämlich mit jeder Menge Käfern und Insekten aufwarten - und das in 250.000-facher Vergrösserung.

Im Dschungel von Borneo lernt der Zuseher Papilio, die Raupe, sowie die Gottesanbeterin Hierodula kennen und begleitet diese in ihren unterschiedlichen Lebenszyklen. Durch die revolutionäre 3D-Technik ist man auch im heimischen Wohnzimmer mittendrin statt nur dabei. Als Erzählerin fungiert Dame Judy Dench.

Die HD-DVD: Die HD-Disc komm im schicken Slim-Digipack daher, das in einem Pappschuber steckt. Als Beigabe sind zwei 3D-Brillen enthalten.

Nach dem Copyrighthinweis und der Verleiherinfo kommt man ins hübsch gestaltete Hauptmenü.

Das Bild: Sowohl in 2D als auch (und vor allem) in 3D ist Bugs! ein Genuß. Bis auf einige wenige Dropouts erlebt man die Farbenpracht der Tier- und Pflanzenwelt im Dschungel Borneos in einer fantastischen Detailtreue und Schärfe. Hintergrundrauschen macht sich nur selten bemerkbar, der hervorragende Kontrastumfang trägt sein Schäufelchen zum ungeheuer plastischen Bildeindruck bei.

Der Ton: Auch der Ton vermittelt dem Zuschauer das Gefühl, mitten in den Untiefen des Regenwalds zu stehen. Der Raumklang präsentiert sich äußerst differenziert und ist mit unzähligen direktionalen Effekten gespickt. Ein großartiges Hörerlebnis ohne Fehl und Tadel.

Die Extras:

- Making Of (ca. 32:03 min.): Das Making Of, wie auch die anderen Extras sind im Bildformat 1:33:1 gehalten. Der Regisseur und sein Team kommentieren den hochgradig interessanten Produktionsprozeß. Man beobachtet die Crew beim nächtlichen Einfangen der Insekten, bekommt vom Kameraassistenten das 3D-Equipment präsentiert und erfährt, dass z.B. auch im Mulu-Nationalpark gedreht wurde, dass die Nahaufnahmen in Großbritannien gemacht wurden oder dass die in der Dokumentation vorkommende Hütte eigens versetzt werden musste. Den Zuseher erwarten auch hier wunderschöne Bilder, wenn auch nicht in HD-Qualität.

Die kurzen Interviews (ca. 06:37 min.) mit Regisseur Mike Slee, Kameramann Sean Philips und den Produzenten Alexandra Ferguson, Phil Streather und Jonathan Parker bieten daraufhin wenig Neues und kauen zumeist das aus dem Making Of Bekannte wieder.

Auch das Behind the Scenes-Segment (07:06 min.) ist völlig redundant zum ausgezeichneten Making Of.

Das Bonusmaterial wird durch TV-Spots, eine Bildergalerie und den Original-Kinotrailer vervollständigt.

Fazit: 3D-Naturdoku der Extraklasse auf technischer feiner HD-DVD, die zudem über ein tolles Making Of verfügt. So greifbar war Heimkino bisher noch nie!

There is something wonderfully uncomplicated and primeval about watching
a lion stalk its prey. The gentle padding towards the putative victims,
the careful and close watching, then the pounce. If you're at all upset
at watching all of this redness in tooth and claw, then you'd be well
advised to pop out for a biscuit as the sleek desert lions of Namib tear
into a docile herd of donkeys. The hapless beasts are sitting ducks. Or
sitting donkeys, indeed. Lions have only recently returned to the Namib
desert, to the joy of some, including conservationist Flip Stander, and
the consternation of others, notably the tribes who frequently have their
livestock ripped to shreds. But, as this excellent film shows, Stander
does his best to try to ensure that the two can co-exist as peacefully
as possible.

The Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) is one of two subspecies of Eastern Gorillas. There are two populations. One is only found in the Virunga volcanic mountains of Central Africa, within three national parks: Mgahinga, in south-west Uganda; Volcanoes, in north-west Rwanda; and Virunga, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The other is found in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Some claim that the Bwindi population in Uganda is a third subspecies, although no formal taxonomic description has been published.

A census taken in 2003 has shown a 17% increase in population size since 1989. There are now a total of 380 gorillas in 30 social groups in the Virungas[3] and a total of about 320 in Bwindi. However, the Mountain Gorilla continues to be considered critically endangered on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species. It faces an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild due to habitat loss, poaching, human disease, and war.[2] All in all there are only around 700 Mountain Gorillas left.Technical Specs

The jungle is full of frightening creatures, but possibly the most unsettling of all is the African driver ant. This nasty, allconsuming insect may only be small, but when it moves in swarms of millions, virtually nothing can stand in its way.

It seems to be the violent chav of the natural world: it has an enormous head which contains a comparatively small brain - the rest of the space is occupied by huge muscles to operate its razorsharp jaws, which it uses like Stanley knives on anything that crosses its path.

This excellent documentary shows how an army of ants overpowers larger animals by ripping them to pieces. You wouldn't want these neighbours from hell in your patch of the jungle.
